Interest rates and gold in 1980....

    Wednesday, January 28, 2004, 8:21:00 PM EST

    Gold Market Summary

    Author: Jim Sinclair/CBS MarketWatch

"Remember that increased interest rates = a lower bond market = support to gold because it is negative to the US economy.

Although a drop in the bond market would initially be supportive to the dollar because of short covering, that strength is limited in time and measure. In 1980, when gold hit its high, the return on 10 year US Treasuries was 12 7/8%.

Although anything can happen and probably will in the short term, when the smoke clears the dollar will decline and gold will rise."

In addition, the world population in 1980 was 4.5 billion, today it is 6.5 billion...and gold production per capita is declining....
