    NWLI Investments

I am trying to understand the investments that the company is making.

What are your thoughts about the quality and liquity of this investments this company has on its books?

It carries an investment portfolio of $7.7 Billion.
Of which, $7.3 Billion is debt securities.

Can any one speak specifically about the debt securities?

Also, they have a small derivative portfolio.
Can anyone speak to exposures involved?

    • Take a look at their annual report SEC filings. There is a lot of detail on this.

I personally feel pretty good about what they've got here. As I recall, they have less than 1% in any investment and also rode out the 2008 / 2009 market with minimal losses. They've got minimal subprime exposure.

The derivatives are used to offset the market gains sold in their variable annuities. They are essentially call options on the S&P 500 to pay for these gains. They manage these very conservatively.

Also, take a look at their President's Letter put out during the height of the financial crisis: https://www.nationalwesternlife.com/beacon/pdfs/sat-1177.pdf
