Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) probably would love to ship its new Lumia 820 and 920 smartphones with the Windows Phone 8 operating system as soon as possible, but timing is everything. A piece came out Friday morning citing anonymous sources that the struggling handset manufacturer will have its new flagship phones on U.S. store shelves sometime in November – perhaps as early as November 2, which would be a week after the anticipated release date of the Windows 8 operating system and the Surface tablet by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT).
Reports are that Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) will be beholden to Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which apparently is still finalizing its Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 operating systems and they won’t be released until late October, which means Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) would be using Windows Release to Manufacturing version for to finalize its OS in its Lumia handsets. Microsoft Corporation (NYSE:NOK) and expected Lumia carrier AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) have indicated that Lumia phones would be available by early November – which would be consistent with the expected six-week lead time to finalize the Windows operating system in time for its October 26.
Whether this is going to be too late for Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) or Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) to make headway in the smartphone market, which is already dominated by the Android operating system from Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), remains to be seen. But it is all about timing, when one considers all of the chatter that says Apple will have its new iPhone 5 on store shelves by the end of September – that means Apple would have a four- to six-week head start on Microsoft and Nokia in the holiday shopping season. It might have to come down to pricing for the Lumia and a relative lack of new features on the iPhone 5 to make for a favorable comparison.
Timing is everything. And what will be the timing for investors like hedge-fund manager Jim Simons of Renaissance Technologies to make their next aggressive move on Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK)?

Nokia have to wait for iPhone 5 announcement, Microsoft WP8 official release, phone company testing before it can release the phones.
September 5 announcement is to get in front and poke holes in the hype machine of Apple iPhone 5. Only after we see the new iPhone 5 hardware can we make a more reliable judgement on Lumia 920.

It would be interesting to see if the iPhone 5 sort of goes into a flop mode (not likely - but it could happen). Why buy a 5 when a 4 or 4s will do? And if your 4 or 4s is working great - macro economics says wait - the 5 will get cheaper.
Amazon pads are neat. I want the white as soon as I can get it. I have the Touch. Like it ... but I saw the Nook side-lit for night reading which is a great idea and wondered why Amazon did not do that. I liked the Nook after I saw it. So Amazon did just that and it looks better than the Nook and what Nook did - now I won't have to race for a light switch - ever - or use the dumb attached night reading light - ever. Give the Touch away to others in the family.
No one knew the time frame for WP8. So early Nov. Dual release - Surface and WP8 same time and the OS too I guess. Makes sense - maybe they should have made that more clear - but the presentation was about the phone. A good phone. So what is the price? Will it cut deeply into iPhone 5 margin? I hope so. So maybe a lot of iPhone customers wait till WP8 price is announced before they decide?
So what was Samsung prancing around saying they have a WP8 out for- as its release is also unknown?
Sentiment: Strong Buy
Oh good....for all of that Christmas shopping I do in October.....(rolling eyes). People do their holiday shopping in November and December. Having a product out by November is most important for the holiday market.
