Q4 2012 sales of Windows Phones so far has seen a significant boost over the same period last year.
Using the number of Monthly Active Facebook users as a guide, we can see around 627,000 MAU of the built-in Facebook app has been added since the 1st October 2012, the start of the quarter.
Last year over the same period less than 150,000 was added by the 15th December, possibly hinting at the source of Steve Ballmer’s statement that “Windows Phones are so far selling at four times the rate of the same time last year”
Last year according to Gartner, who claims to measure units actually sold to end users rather than shipments, said 2.759 million Windows Phones were sold in Q4 2011. The data suggests already 7 million Windows Phones were sold so far this quarter, and we may finally be heading to a + 10 million Windows Phone quarter.
The Facebook numbers are the first real hard numbers which are not ratios or percentages which gives real evidence that Windows Phones are not just in short supply due to poor supply, but also high sales. Do our readers believe this will finally be Windows Phone’s break out quarter?
Sentiment: Strong Buy
I don't use facebook, but I bought Lumia 920, but my sister does use facebook and she got one too. So, it is possible facebook extrapolation could be on the low side of lumias sold, imo. This is good. Having said that, instead of everybody guessing and extrapolating, it would be so much easier if eflop was transparent and released the real nos like apple and samsung do. How is that going to hurt nok, but help rather. Worthless CEO, imo and the best buddy of shorties, imo. I have no doubt this man's actions have restrained the stock appreciation for nok, imo. His refusal to address the supply constraint which he probably created, imo and his stealth mode of operation and his refusal to give some idea as to how the lumia sales is doing (even balmer made a comment about better nos) has not helped the nok longs at all. On the other hand, in absence of these data, the shorties are writing their own stories to fit their agenda, imo.
here we go, this is my number: So far 4.000.000+ Windows units sold this quarter this includes W7.XX versions also, seems to give credit to Yahoo China and the 2.5 million W8 handsets Nokia sold by the time article came out.
Looks like a bright 4th quarter and better Q1 2013.
The facebook data has been pretty good to give you a ballpark idea of Windows phone sold based on the increase of users on a monthly basis. So far the numbers since I started following Nokia increase or decrease in sales are a good bell weather, I have my reservations now and will go back to previous estimates and real numbers and do the calculations as I don't remember the multiplier to give my opinion this time as the number seem pretty pretty high!, not that I am complaining it just seems high and don't want my expectations that high just to come crashing back down with real numbers later on.
I for one bought a 920 unlocked and DO NOT use facebook at all, China sales are not included either in Facebook monthly data, are therefore part of the number after the multiplier, the thing is the phones are not available worldwide in places like China yet to trust the multiplier applied to FB numbers. Hope it makes sense.
It is simply providing the number of additional monthly active facebook users from win phones. The took the data from 4th Q last year and figured out the percentage of active users to users sold to give a guesstimate of sales for this year. It's simply a guess of possible sales from FB data.
it is not my research. I pulled it from wmpoweruser
