"North Syracuse, NY -- Onondaga County's bomb squad responded to the region's main post office in North Syracuse after a report of a suspicious package Monday night.
The package turned out to contain clothing, said Sheriff Kevin Walsh.
Authorities responded at 9 p.m. to the facility, located at 5640 E. Taft Road, according to emergency dispatchers.
Authorities scanned the box and discovered its contents, he said."
OK, so they are scanning these suspicious boxes? Doesn't that mean that they have to pick up the box and move it through a scanner? I don't know if they can scan it while it is in situ, so wouldn't it be safer to swab it or check with a non-contact sniffer?
My understanding is that a lot of these IED's in the war theatre are designed to explode when they are moved out of the roadway.
Can anyone shed light on what they might mean by "scanned"?
