This kind of tech seems unnecessary. Computers have webcams, most boardrooms/meeting rooms have VTC systems. Why have an awkward mobile device? This seems to be little more than a toy. I've heard of uses in med field for doctors to do their rounds. I'm not bashing. I want to get into this stock but it seems like real robotic innovations (and integration into everyday life) are years away, maybe even decades.
I'm kind of surprised they didn't equip it with some type of modular ports where enterprising individuals could add arms, manipulators, stand-off sensors or whatever came to mind. Even if IRBT doesn't have a settled design on manipulators they could have at least allowed others too.
Until it can manipulate it's environment remotely, I agree the uses are pretty limited. Roving security in buildings, doing medical rounds maybe. Telepresence in and of itself doesn't lite me up very much.
You could call someone with a webcam to act as your robot or... If you could drive your virtual presence there yourself, that would be better. Ever try to get someone to help you? hand me that screwdriver... no the other one, sheesh! NO, Ill get it...
I see many opportunities -- want to visit the museum?
