The Rim Fire Is Not Spreading Thru Brush. It's A Crown Fire.

The Los Angeles Times reports the so-called Rim fire has grown into one the largest in recent California history

"Aside from the hot, dry weather and the rugged and hard-to-reach terrain, another difficulty was the blaze's tendency to burn the tops of trees, creating a 'crown fire' with long, intense flames that skip across forested land faster than a wildfire that creeps along near the ground.

For the record California has become hotter and drier. I've lived there for 14 years and have noticed the changes.

California lakes are warming, sea levels are rising, wildfires are spreading, and mountain plants and animals are migrating to higher ground as the impact of climate change takes hold throughout the state, a new report says.

The evidence of the effects of the warming trend emerged in an analysis of 36 "indicators" - warning signs of changes - that are detailed in the 240-page report released Wednesday by the state's Environmental Protection Agency.
