Pattern Energy Group announced Tuesday it has begun construction of a $400 million farm in Carson County that will result in an $800,000 payment to establish a community fund for civic and educational causes.

The facility will also be one of the first in the region to connect to the new transmission lines built to carry electricity to large cities downstate.

“This project will provide multiple benefits to Carson County and its residents, including more than 200 construction jobs, at least 12 permanent operations and maintenance positions, and clean energy for up to 60,000 Texas homes without using any of the region’s limited water supplies,” said Mike Garland, CEO of the company. “Over the life of the project millions of dollars in property taxes will be paid to Carson County, the White Deer and Panhandle School Districts, and the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District.”

The installation will have the capacity to produce 218 megawatts or power from 118 turbines.

A wind farm doesn’t produce 100 percent of its capacity because that would mean operating at its maximum potential all day every day.

An estimate from the Alternative Energy Institute at West Texas A&M University shows it costs about $2 million per megawatt to build a wind farm or about $436 million for this one.

GE Energy Financial Services and Citigroup Global Markets are investors and PEG is the developer and managing partner, according to a news release.
