To me the top reason to sell JCP is that the American department store is under great pressure and facing new challenges currently. Why buy a bread maker at JC Penney when you can buy the same quality at Amazon for 20% less? Why buy the granny panties at JC Penney when you can get something more alluring at Victoria's Secret? Why buy teen clothing at JC Penney when there are so many hipper choices out there? The American department store won't disappear tomorrow but the weaker and less well-positioned ones may see their profit margins erode or forced to shutter stores. If the right moves aren't made, the weaker stores may be forced out of business. Sears and JC Penney are two of the weakest stores that come to mind. Sears is doing a slow-motion shutdown at the behest of a man who's trying maximize the value extracted from SHLD assets. JC Penney is still suffering from disaffected customers who were driven away in droves by a lot of ill-conceived moves made by the former CEO. Recovering from this 'hit' would be difficult at best but JC Penney also finds its corporate funds limited by actions taken in the last three years. JCP will play out like Circuit City. More and more vendors will insist on cash terms and JC Penney will file for chapter 11 bankruptcy to reorganize. JC Penney will try to find financing for the reorganization and fail. JC Penney will convert its bankruptcy filing to a chapter 7 liquidation. JCP shareholders get hosed and JC Penney starts the chain-wide liquidation sales to shut down and fade into retail history. ☺☺☺
