Once again. A press release to announce a BB10 feature that has been on other platforms for years.
1. IOS and Android have many, many wifi only voice calling apps. That work across platforms.
2. Beaverfail thinks it will be big in developing countries for bandwidth savings. Yet it is Wifi only! Not compatible with 2G, 3G or 4G. oops.
3. Apple's facetime is not limited to wifi.
4. But the biggest concern is that if RIM baked this into the operating system it could be an indicator that Skype is not coming to BB10. Much like Skype did not come to Playbook. This would be berry, berry bad for RIM.
video chat on playbook is flawless, world wide. audio and video are greatly superior to facetime. In fact, the audio is the best I have experienced on any telecommunications device. We use playbooks, and I won an ipad 3 in a contest, hence I use both devices. Both are awesome devices, however playbook wins hands down in video/audio messanging.
Sentiment: Strong Buy
"facetime on ijunk is so limited to WIFI IT DOES NOT WORK ANY WHERE ELSE"
FaceTime works on iMacs, MacBooks, iPhones, iPads and even iPod touches. Apple sells a over 50 million iDevices a quarter. RIM's 7 million #$%$ sold last quarter barely beat out how the number of $1,200 Macs Apple sold.
Just speculation of course. But msft would like to be the #3 mobile computing platform and has demonstrated feebleness in their efforts to get there. By denying BB10 Skype or dragging their feet they could put a hurt on the launch.
I don't think so. If BB10 shows better success than NOK phones then Skype which is a division of MSFT will join BB platform it is simple as that. Having said that Rimm is working on alternatives. The same way iphone 5 is working for alternative to Google map.
This is BB7 feature only BB 10 will have BBM voice and BBM video which has been confirm by Crackberry web site. It will be announced with all other features that they keeping for themselves till launch.
This is big in developing countries in Africa and South East Asia where Rimm is already doing well this well strengthen their position.
BB10 will be geared toward North America & Europe at least in the beginning.Parts of developing countries will be introduced on gradual basis. BB7 will still be supported and improved as confirmed by Rimm many times over.
BB 10 is in a different class and it is developed from ground up with feature like balance, flow, NFC, Hub and more to be announced. It will not be a cheap phone unlike the BB7 curve which are really BBM phones and are solid and cheap to maintain. They are great for people on budget
"This is big in developing countries in Africa and South East Asia where Rimm is already doing well this well strengthen their position. "
Market to countries with no money. Great strategy.
RIM is getting its lunch handed to them in other countries too with cheap android phones. Check international market share. Wifi calling across platforms is not a new feature there. It is another example of RIM playing catch up to the market feature that was at least 2 years old.
Blackberries dont have front facing cameras so all they could do was voice at this time. Another strike against it against IOS and Android.
I wonder if Skype is not going to be on BB10 considering that BB is investing so heavily in a native video calling app.
