There are more and more news reports on the impressive performance of Merck's new cholestrol drug in early stage studies that raises HDL (good cholestrol) and reduces LDL (bad cholestrol). It has already been postulated that if this drug is truly successful, it might indeed eliminate the need for stents. This drug has the same objective as Pfiser's torcetrapib that flopped in late stage development four years ago. If you recall torcetrabib was touted as the 'new generation' Lipitor until it flopped. As a PFE shareholder, I am green eyed with envy. Why couldn't the stupid Pfizer R&D division correct the problem with torcetrapib instead of Merck four years ago when they had the chance. Pfizer R&D absolutely sucks and the only thing it is good at is throwing away 8 billion dollars every year for at least the last six years. On this issue, Merck will probably eat PFE's lunch. Am I mad? You can bet your life I am. Pooh to PFE R&D. It really stinks.
