IBD: About the expression "the greatest invention since sliced bread") (OT)
Believe it or not, the sale of pre-sliced bread dates back only to July 1928. The man who invented the first bread-slicing machine was Otto Rohwedder, a second-generation German-American. Before he came along, folks either made their own bread or bought it as whole loaves.
He was a jeweler by trade and owned three jewelry stores in Missouri but nearing his 50th birthday, he had his brainstorm and was so sure it would succeed, he sold the jewelry stores to finance his efforts to perfect his machine and get a patent.
Within five years of his 1928 invention, 80% of American bread was being sold pre-sliced.
