Just because the North Slope has lousy weather doesn't mean that all of Alaska does. I've been down south on several occasions in the summertime and the weather is very nice - with the scenery being incomparable. Even in winter though, cities like Anchorage and especially Juneau have far less severe weather than upper midwest cities in the Lower 48.
With the lousy overall economy and the money you're earning in Northern Alaska, you can hardly complain. And besides the money you earn, you can probably win a whole lot more if you are good at cards. I imagine that just like in the Navy, there are some serious pinochle and other gambling card games that go on where you are. Participating in card games against "fish" is one of the big things that I miss from my two years of active duty in the Navy in the late '60's.
