Sorry, but this isn't at all unlikely. One of the best rumors in the firm at present is that the stock WILL first be split 3:1 by the Board in 1999. Simultaneously, each employee in the "across the board stock option program" (i.e., everyone except senior managers) will then receive a special grant of 150 share options of the split stock to celebrate Pfizer's 150 year anniversary (Yup, next year!!!!). More senior managers will, of course, receive more share options. And all stockholders will reap whatever benefits come from the 3:1 split--whether an employee or not.
This is rumor, of course, but frankly...I'd bet on it.
