I need a little help with some numbers. Basically I am trying to understand the short position on PLAB:
Shares Outstanding5: 42.10M
% Held by Insiders1: 22.09%
% Held by Institutions1: 86.80%
Shares Short (as of 13-Nov-09)3: 4.23M
Short Ratio (as of 13-Nov-09)3: 7.2
Short % of Float (as of 13-Nov-09)3: 12.60%
Shares Short (prior month)3: 3.81M
shares held by insiders and institutions add up to 109%. How does this happen?
Shares Short = 4.2M which is 10% of the shares outstanding. But insiders and institutions own most of the shares.
I am not an expert; could you help me out just a little?
Why would anyone buy this company? The only competitors left are all in the high end business and PLAB is primarily in the legacy business. The only high end site now is Idaho and it is losing money hand over fist. When the exclusivity agreement with Micron expires (as happened in Allen with TXN) this site will have no high end customers left. Or meybe, like MOT, Micron moves all its fab work to Taiwan. PLAB will not be bought until pieces are bought up at the liquidation sale.
I really do hope that no one would buy or sell based on this or any other message board. It is assumed that because you are here, Yahoo Finance PLAB message board, you have access to Yahoo’s PLAB’s financials.

Now then I would like help understanding the reasons behind the following

Qtrly Revenue Growth (yoy):
Gross Profit (ttm):
Net Income Avl to Common (ttm):
Diluted EPS (ttm):

Are we talking recession or are the other more compelling reasons PLAB is not making a profit. I am headed for Edgar and reading financial statements, something more than a summary.
As stated I am an amateur and here on this message board hoping to get some insight as to whether or not PLAB is a long term investment (1 to 3 years). Having just finished investing my rollover IRA I like PLAB as it has the potential to turn my dreams an Acura into a Skylark (182S or 182T).
“Lets see, gut feeling PLAB will be bought out? No facts, no data, nothing to base that opinion on? Who would buy this company?”
So Cowboy (z88and8) where are your facts? I am here, all ears, wanting to know more. I am new here and looking for some short cuts, good reading links. Please supply links or information to help me along my way.
By the way is there anyone interested in taking this discussion (PLAB) off line?
Morgan Stanley doesn't usually raise a company 100 mill just before they declare bankruptcy. My guess is that since the $ came in after the last earnings report, we're going to get positive earnings report. Maybe Morgan will put a buy on stock after earnings, since they don't currently cover it.
