Dagwood Bumstead, I mean Gary Kelly is a Nincompoop
$40 to board a plane first ??? Just fly a real airline and get an assigned seat . I like the idea of generating more revenue but this idiot has gone after small source streams.....change fees, no-show fees, and now $40 to board first. ( Heck, I've been paying $10 to board first for years...but I wont pay $40 ) ..........Hey Dagwood, How about charging EVERYBODY a $5/ bag fee. The marketing would be " WE ONLY CHARGE A FRACTION OF WHAT OTHER LINES CHARGE. The effect on the bottom line would be absolutely gargantuan. In 2011 Southwest had net profit of $750 million while flying more than 100 million passengers. Assuming each passenger had one bag, the fee would have generated $500 million more ( 66% increase ) to the bottom line. OMG, what if $10/bag was charged, still less than half what others are charging ????? This would be a much larger and more reliable income stream than the small pockets Kelly is going after. Oh Well...at least this idiot is trying !!! BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONDIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're paying for a special service. You don't have to pay it and just board with whatever boarding card assignment given to you. I think it's a nice option if I really don't want to be the last person to board but I fly all the time so my boarding position means nothing to me.
Boarding last means you play musical chairs trying to find an available seat. People have coats, handbags, laptops etc. in the seat next to them hoping someone won't ask them to move it. Hey Dagwood, the flight is full, there's no extra room for you on Bumstead Air.
Actually this is a good idea. I wouldn't pay $40 to board first but some people do. And SW isn't the only airline doing it in fact SW is late to the table on this one. Others have been offering upgrades to business class or first class for $50-100 a pop for sometime. Again I wouldn't do this but for some where money isn't an object it's easy profit. Can't fault SW on this one this is a good idea.
