    Can someone explain the drop?

    1. NPD group is a market research firm. They report sales on a wide variety of consumer related items. NPD stands for National Purchase Diary. Their video game report does not include digital or used sales. I believe it comes out second Thursday of each month around 7:00 pm ET. It is subscriber based but the results are reported through newspapers if you search. If anyone receives the NPD report itself could you please copy and paste it, I would like to read the actual thing.

I remember a couple years ago NPD was thinking of canceling their video game report because analysts did not believe it was accurate. You see Patcher and other analysts questioning its validity today.

There were no notable releases this month. Also everyone forgets that the Kinect was released in November 4, 2010 and still selling strong in January 2011. Which would greatly skew the data. The Kinect was the fastest selling consumer electronic device selling over 8 million units in 60 days. I don’t think anyone would guess the kinect was the fastest selling electronic device.

The only bright side is NPD is setting the bar low for the Wii U. Guarantee next year you will see at least a 38% increase.

    2. There were too many AAA video games released at the same time. This is great for GME because they will sell these games used. Plus no notable releases for January meant more Holiday releases were bought used.

    3. GME is doing some very great marketing. When you are a power up reward member and you buy a game it goes into a virtual library. Thus GME can see which games you own. So when games you own release DLC GME sends you an email saying you should buy your DLC from GME. DLC is really for the hardcore gamers who are members of the power up reward program. I remember early on GME said they had sold 60% and 600,000 units of COD elite DLC.
