Interesting visit to Gamestop.
- Preorders of Xbox limited to 16 total. Preorders of PS4 were restricted to 32. That is just extremely low.
- An large number of games are cheaper to download on Steam than buy used at GME. Left for Dead 2 and Need for Speed MW are good examples. ($40 for used disk; $15 on Steam or Xbox).
- Apparently, kids can sell their games at GME for cash, then buy download for less than GME paying. Even the clerk is doing that when he can.
- Clerk reports that PC gaming having a huge impact on everybody but hard core gamers. League of Legends in particular. GME does not sell PC games.
But, clerk reported that sales are ok this summer. He says that so far, people just like having the physical disc. Clerk was worried about his future.....
Went to another GME store.....Xbox One presales limited to ten units. For the whole store. They were convinced that no more Xbone's would be available until 2014. Very nervous about Steam taking all the business.....Lots of kids looking for Skylanders though - I wonder if you can support a five billion dollar valuation selling the video game equivalent of Happy Meals.
Some will say the Gamestop is fine because they deal mostly in used games. But, what they fail to realize is people are buying NEW games, there won't be as many USED games later to trade in when the game isn't new anymore.
So a drop in new sales hurts Gamestop in the short term for new sales AND the long term for trade ins.
