That is why we have created the Guantanamo Human Rights Commission. That is why we shall take Mr Begg and a delegation of European detainees' families to Washington in March, when the US Supreme Court will hear submissions on behalf of 14 detainees. Our visit will be hosted by the American Civil Liberties Union. What our government has failed to do we shall try to do in Washington.
We are confident of success. America is a country which loves liberty. So great is the respect for human rights that the government has been obliged recently, by an act of Congress, to cease provision of economic aid to Uzbekistan, because a thousand people are interned there without trial.
Americans are poorly served by a president who distorts the meaning of the word freedom whenever he speaks. But when it is pointed out that their government imprisons more people without trial than the barbarous government in Uzbekistan, they will respond.
