The unintended consequence is that if you don't want the income and don't want a taxable event, you get one and have no say in it.
A dividend is nothing more than a distribution of capital. Any stock can be a dividend stock if you choose by simply selling a dividend portion of shares at any time in the amount and timing you choose.
Dividends mean zero to the sophisticated investor. I personally am avoiding all dividend stocks now, since they are likely to fall with the higher tax rates on dividends.
