When I say guidance, I simply mean they need to just have a positive stance on the coming quarter. Most investors do not have a long range view and are interested in what's happening in the near future. It's fine to say things are still progressing and getting better without having a negative view.
Stock performance is generally guided by investor perception. Of course business performance is important too. However, a strong management team understands how to convey guidance and mold investor expectations and perception. Paulson did a terrible job as CEO and did not have the requisite skills to lead a conference call and get the right message across.
