Vertex R&D record is better than you think. I believe Vertex had another drug approved several years ago--Lexiva, a second generation PI for HIV that was co-discovered by Vertex and GlaxoSmithKline. I believe they sold the rights to it to raise cash for funding development of other drug candidates including Incivek. Remember, in addition to the approved drugs, Vertex has a broad pipeline of drugs in various stages of development. VX-809, which could potentially treat 90% of cystic fibrosis patients, could be Vertex's next "blockbuster".
