Big piece in This American Life segment today on NPR which details the significant health dangers of even moderate overuse of acetaminophen.
This is the other side of the story here with Zohydro: balancing the dangers of Oxy abuse and those who legitimately need this narcotic without the dangers of harming their liver with too much acetaminophen.
Again, the FDA is on the horns of a dilemma: go completely against the AdCom recommendation and approve Zohydro. Or approve it, thus inflaming the passions of those who are pounding the table for tighter controls on this type of narcotic.
The FDA knows the risks on both sides of the argument. Ultimately, the doctors should have final say on who they prescribe Zohydro to, as they are the ones who bear the burden of "Do no harm." My bet is that approval is imminent, and the FDA will lean towards the health concerns of those with chronic pain who don't have other options and who don't need the added health burden and medical costs associated with damaged livers.
