i am working hard for my kidz money! waiting for dalbavancin to be approved. we have some drug users that often come with MRSA infections that require long term antibiotics. you cannot send them home with PICC line because they can use them to inject drugs and die. many have bacteremia and linezolid cannot be used, and some already are sick and have low platelets. for these patients I wish i had dalbavancin. some of them have deep seeded small abscesses that require 4-6 weeks of antibiotics and linezolid can cause optic neuropathy which is irreversible. some of these patients also have jobs and cannot afford to be hospitalized for 4-6 weeks to finish IV therapy, because they can lose their jobs, cars ruin their credits etc. for these patients the only viable alternative is once a week dalbavancin given in an infusion clinic. and then there are the non-insured patients that now have to stay in the hospital until they complete the therapy. for these, the hospitals could make payment arrangements with infusion centers and discharge patients home and send them to complete therapy with weekly dalbavancin. i am sure more uses will surfaces once the drug is available and more doctors begin to appreciate its advantages.
