OK folks. How about a new stock contest starting in about 2 weeks? My portfolio needs some new blood. Anything new I have bought, I have sold and still have mostly the same core holdings. The overall valuations in my portfolio are not as cheap as I would like. First quarter reports are done and we will get to see Q2 before the end of the contest. Here are the rules as usual.
- Pick any three stocks before the open of the market on Monday 06/09/2014.
- They must be listed with no dotPK or dotOBs. I do invest in these, but for the sake of the contest will be excluded.
- No funds. I also invest in these but this is a stock picking contest and not a fund, market timing or asset allocation contest.
- More than one person is allowed to pick the same stock.
- The winner will have the highest combined return after approximately three months or in this case after the close on Friday 09/05/14.
- Dividends are included. If your stock gets one, please let me know in case I might miss it.
- This is a friendly contest with the grand prize of bragging rights as the grand stock contest winner. Don't get on folks because of their picks or results. I have done great in the contest many times while my actual portfolio lagged and visa versa.
- I will try to give result updates every week or two as things progress.
All are welcome. If you are interested, please reply to this post with three stock symbols. If you care to, you can give a short reasoning for each of your picks. Good luck to all!!!
Hurry up if you are not yet included. Please let me know of any entry errors. So far I have:

OK, I have procrastinated long enough. My picks are as follows:
HIMX: A recent momentum tech dividend stock that has recently hit a sharp decline in price. Rumors are that Google will not use its display in its new Glass product. HIMX just unveiled a new version of their display which solves some technical issues and I feel that it is very unlikely that Google will switch displays. Google has the option to increase an investment in the company with a deadline sometime in July. HIMX has a strong pipeline of other products. At this price, I believe most of the hype is priced out and it is at a very fair valuation.
SIMO: A tech co that I have had for awhile and is my largest holding. I liked it at 16.5 and even better when it went into the 15s recently. Unfortunately for the contest it bounced back up a bit. SIMO has strong new memory products and a LTE phone chip for Samsung which is going to be used in Korea but possibly spread. It is not cheap but I think it can grow.
TGA: Transglobe Energy just came up on one of my screens and I don't know much about it. It seems cheaply valued but there are some negatives. It produces oil in Egypt and Yemen and there are significant political risks. Also, current account payments from Egypt are behind schedule.
Gotta run. Going to watch the basketball game. Miami is my pick there.
So far I got those below. I am still desperately trying to find something new and exciting. My recent screens did not pick up much of interest unless you like Yemen oil.
First of all I was about to skip the contest because of summer doldrums taking the market down and am bearish now but did want to participate so here goes. NVAX, GLUU and MSTX. Both NVAX and GLUU have had recent offerings so IMHO downside is limited and plus side is infinite. MSTX I just bought today (didn't want to pick a stock I didn't own) Baker Brothers bought at .68c as a new position and they have a pretty good history with these speculative biotechs. May I add that I ave up and bought more NVAX at $4.14. I also bought GLUU today at $3.65. Good Luck
I'll be out of touch later this week so I'll give you my pics today:
$0.64 - HTM - US Geothermal - Profitable geothermal power producer selling for slightly more than its tangible book value of $.55. Strong development pipeline in place to drive revenue and profit growth. Latest EPA regulations creating increased demand for non CO2 emitting energy sources.
$2.64 - STLY - Stanley Furniture - Ceases domestic production of its unprofitable "Young American" line on Friday and will be putting its Robbinsville NC facility (on books for ~ $18M) up for sale immediately after. Currently profitable imported "Stanley" line will continue to be produced. Employee count will drop from ~500 to ~75. Current TBV = $4.81 per share. Surviving downsized company expected to be profitable and cash heavy.
$10.55 KTCC - Key Tronic - No further explanation required.
If MCZ was reporting earnings next week rather than this week, it would have been on my list again.
