Oregon, which just last week welcomed its first public-access compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling station, will soon see eight new CNG stations built in various locations throughout the state.

Supported by $4 million in federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) funds, these new stations will be a critical bridge to help the state meet Gov. John Kitzhaber's 10-Year Energy Action Plan, which mandates that Oregon's large fleets convert 20% of their vehicles to alternative fuels in the next decade.

Five of the new projects are located along the Interstate 5 corridor from Portland to Sutherlin, each providing CNG fueling for various fleets in the transit, refuse and other sectors. Other projects will "make investments in Oregon communities that currently lack CNG infrastructure, such as Bend."
