Toronto (Dow Jones) By buying ATI, AMD can add graphics functionality directly into its central processors, preempting a similar move by Intel, analysts said. Intel currently includes graphics functionality on its integrated chip sets, but many industry watchers believes it plans to add graphics capability to its central processors. This would improve graphics functionality on personal computers and laptops and allow Intel to charge more for its central processors, analysts said. It would also heighten the already stiff competition that ATI and Nvidia are facing from Intel, analysts said. If AMD believes Intel is going down this route, it was compelled to buy ATI regardless of the high price, analysts said. ATI, meanwhile, will be able to add put its graphics on an AMD platform, analysts said.
