AMD is just doing it to get under Intel investors' skin. Just checked if HPQ, Dell, or Sun have servers with AMD Barcelona chips. None had them. So AMD is advertising something they can't make. At least not enough to satisfy the needs of the big players. I also noticed that a server with Intel Xeon Quads are less than 10% more than an Opteron Dual server. Why would anyone even consider buying AMD based servers at this point? Intel is basically kicking AMD all over the place.
"AMD and Sun are working with Texans in TACC Supercomputer project. TACC (Texas Advance Computing Center) won $59 Million from National Science Foundation to build largest supercomputer, and this baby is currently being assembled - plan is to deliver 500 TFLOPS, or almost double the number that Blue Gene/L achieves."
Get a clue. Intel is ceding AMD some low-end unit marketshare on desktop/laptops, but is GAINING share on servers. Guiding GMs higher just a few weeks ago is a big clue. Based on what we know about Barcelona, that trend is not gonna change!
