Intel’s Chief Exec Expects $100 Media Tablets This Holiday Season
With the recently launched Atom “Bay Trail-T” platform and chips that consume only 2W of power, Intel Corp. can now truly address the market of media and business tablets. What is even more important is that the forthcoming Intel Atom-based slates are projected to be rather inexpensive. If earlier this year Intel vowed to deliver tablets that cost $149 - $199, then now the chipmaker is confident in $99 slates this year.
“We have got Intel tablets. They are in the market. I have got here a Lenovo tablet in my hand, it is fully functional. We intend to drive leadership into this market. We have assets and technologies that nobody else can bring to this marketplace. We can provide the same form factor to an OEM, and they can choose between Windows, Android, Core, Atom. The choices and the innovation they can do with these devices are tremendous. Again, to show you that's not just one device. We've shown you a wall of devices here with systems that will be coming to market from price points below $100 this holiday. Yes, that is below the $100 system price point, for holidays,” said Brian Krzanich, chief executive officer of Intel, during his keynote at the Intel Developer Forum 2013 earlier this week.
Intel Atom Z3000-series system-on-chips for media tablets that consume 2W-3W of power pack in up to four “Silvermont” x86 cores, seventh-generation Intel integrated graphics engine with advanced accelerated video encoding/decoding capabilities, single-channel LPDDR3 memory controller, multiply special-purpose accelerators and engines as well as a host of other technologies.
