Sigh. This argument is so old, tired, and full of holes it's just sad.
1. Coal makes up less than 40% of the US fuel mix and is declining.
2. Most people charge their EVs at night when base load generation coal plants have to keep running but have no power demand. Additional night demand results in 0 additional emissions.
3. Even if they charged 100% on coal during the day, a central coal plant pollutes less than most cars on the road. Centralized pollution control at industrial scale will always beat tiny little catalytic converters on dubiously maintained cars.
4. Many people buying Tesla's wouldn't care even if it were worse for the environment because it's simply a better car.
Actually coal is contributes only 37% of US power output This number will continue to drop as there are some 30 reactors scheduled to come on line in the US..
P.S. You might want to check out the uranium exploration and enrichment stocks as they have been screaming up about as well as Tesla. It appears the energy industry believes in the electric car is the future too and are ramping up to fill the energy demands thats a consumer conversion from petrofuels to electric will invoke.
Some examples are USU $4.00 to 22.98 (up 519%) in the past month and URRE $2.5 to 3.69 (up 1.47%) also in the past month. There are plenty of others in that category I think some are even doing better than that, so not recommended these stocks other than to point out a general trend.
------I simply speak the truth and you do not like it. Try driving one of these cars cross country.
-----You could not do it for lack of charging stations
Sorry, it's already been done. One poster did a 5,000 mile 3 week western road trip. Her trick was to find friendly 50 amp outlets at your local campground.
They told me in 2000 that I couldn't run my computer without M$FT Winblows. I plugged in Linux and later OSX and have run crash free and virus free. I MAY be a challenge right now, but it CAN be done.
Not just Coal, it also runs on natural gas, nuclear, diesel, sun, wind, ocean waves, sugar cane, corn, you name it and it will run on it, unlike a gasoline car that it can only run on gasoline.
