New York to Beijing, China, in about 2 hours," said Daryl Oster, founder of ET3. "That's 8,000 miles, or 4,000 miles per hour. L.A. to New York would be in 45 minutes, with a likely speed of 2,000 mph.
Ummm... at 2,000 mph landspeed that would mean acceleration = velocity ^2 / radius
With Earth as the circle (r = 3959 miles) and landspeed of 2,000 mph that means a = 1010 m/s^2 or about 100 G !!!!! ????
Sentiment: Strong Sell
Excuse me, but I DO mean to be rude: you dopes should actually READ the plan and notes before commenting. On the other hand, maybe you prefer to pass judgement on what you know nothing about. Hint: "The Hyperloop (or something similar) is, in my opinion, the right solution for the specific case of high traffic city pairs that are less than about 1500 km or 900 miles apart."
G are acceleration not velocity.. Simple dynamic problem the passenger is going O mph related to his seat. The problem is not technical.... The problem is funding which is always the case for disruptive technologies. A classic example is artificial diamond instead of silicon wafer semiconductor material. Of course the " cloud social sockpuppts would stop any real technology" .
8000 miles in 2 hours.
We will assume it will use half its journey to speed up and the other half to slow down.
so 4000 miles in 1 hour.
X = 0.5 at^2 + v(0)t + x(0)
We'll make the starting position as zero miles, and the starting speed as zero mph. so v(0) = 0, x(0) = 0
X = 4000 miles = 6.44 x 10^6 meters = 0.5*a*(3600 seconds)^2
Solve for a, and you get a = 0.99 m/s^2
1g = 9.8m/s^2, so 0.99 m/s^2 is about 0.1g.
---We will assume it will use half its journey to speed up and the other half to slow down.
---so 4000 miles in 1 hour.
Do it easy in about 5 minutes. With the acceleration of a model S should get you to 4,000 in about 4 1/2 minutes.
S does 4 to 60 in 4 seconds. So at that rate you gain 60MPH every 4 seconds. 67 gains of 60 mph gets you to 4,020 mph. That makes 4.020 in 4 minutes 28 seconds.....
(( New York to Beijing, China, in about 2 hours ))
lol ,,,, this is so ridiculous. Elon's great idea is 100% fluff. He just says "gee I think this would be neat" and people are commenting on it as if it is going to happen.
