I test drove Model S with the 85khz. At first, the touch screen let me know that I had 250 miles of calculated range and I drove a distance of 20 miles. Then it told me I only had 210 miles left, which means it spent 40 miles of range for 20 miles of driving. I asked the sales guy about it and he said I was driving too fast and I had the heater on. I was driving at the speed limit of 70 miles and I had to have the heater on since it's really cold outside. He told me I should drive it at 55-60 and keep the temperature at 60 for the maximized range. What kind of luxury car is this that I can't even use the heater liberally? What kind of moron compares this car to Porsches and Ferraris when you are expected to drive it at 55-60 mph?
If you accelerate hard, your going to consume more...if you have the heater on, even more...if stop and go, even more...and over 60 even more..it just the way it is. if you dont like it, blame physics and thermodynamics
That's a bit like getting your ICE car in traffic on a hot day, going 2 miles in stop and go, using a gallon of gas and then complaining that you are not getting 30 mpg. Or complaining that your ICE car's brakes just dissipate all your energy as heat and don't put any back. A wasteful ICE car has a lot of extra heat, therefore when you need heat it is "free". Free in that you are using ICE trash heat as a heat source, I am sure if you actually calculated it out electric heat in a Tesla is still cheaper than gas heat from an ICE. What you are trading is not $$ as much as range. If you are not trying to go 250 miles on every charge and you can live with 200 or 150 then go for it, drive super fast and run the heater at full. It costs you a whopping 4 to 7 dollars more.
Not even close. If I run out of gas, I can go to a nearest gas station, spend 90 seconds and fill up my car. If Tesla runs out of electricity, I will have to waste hours on recharging it.
Yes it's ridiculus to not be able to use the heater.
If the car is so great, why doesn't it have an outside thermometer linked to the computer so that it can adjust for the use of the heater.. iow, delta between outside temp & 70 degrees (for inside the car) would adust the range estimate accordingly. Seems like an obvious & simple software feature the car should have.
How does air conditionig affect it? AC uses a lot more elec than heat does. Do you have to drive around with no ac on a 90-degree day in the summer after paying $90,000 for the car ?? LOL...
So we are expected to believe someone who does not know a khz from a KW?
How far did you have to drive? Once you wake up with a full tank (charge) every morning you start to wonder why people want the range limited gasoline cars. No more OH less than a quarter tank: "Got to find a gas station I won't get mugged at"
I've been buying gas for 43 years--never mugged, and generally speaking the car takes less time to fill than walking in the shop to get a cup of coffee. As to my jeep, I carry Jerry cans when I go off road......TESLA have battery packs????? LMFAO. Keep buying the stock, need someone to short off of!
That's because CR compared Model S with a Ford Focus (a $15,000 car) and decided that it is much superior. If you compare Tesla to a car within its price range, it is not that impressive. In Model S, you have to spend about $140,000 to get all the options and it still won't have many of the options that come with a Mercedes or BMW within the same price range.
That is the reality of energy usage. It takes as much energy to heat the cabin as it does to move an electric car - hence 40 miles down after only 20 miles of driving. An ICE car generates a lot of excess heat which is easily redirected into the cabin. When the Volt is running in gas mode it is a lot easier to heat the cabin. Winter cabin heating will always be the Achilles heal of electric cars.
It's a 100K summer toy for the rich guy, just like having a boat. This is not the future of automotive transportation. It's the latest and greatest in your face "look at me" statement of conspicuous consumption. It will fade away and be replaced by something else. What a scam.
