RIM to Roll Out First-Ever Super Bowl Ad; Part of BB10 Debut

BlackBerry is going to the Super Bowl.

Research In Motion Ltd. has said it’s planning to spend big on its marketing push for two new BlackBerry phones and a new mobile and tablet operating system, BlackBerry 10, that it plans to unveil on Wednesday.

And in the first sign that it’s serious, it confirmed Friday it would run ads for the new devices during next month’s Super Bowl. It’s the first time RIM has run Super Bowl ads, and underscores the Waterloo, Ontario, company’s marketing ambitions for the roll-out.

The company, beset for the better part of two years by dwindling BlackBerry sales and a fast-eroding share of the smartphone market, has said the new phones are key to revitalizing the brand.

“A Super Bowl commercial is a great opportunity to show the re-designed, re-engineered and re-invented BlackBerry to tens of millions of consumers on the largest advertising stage of the year,” Frank Boulben, RIM’s Chief Marketing Officer said in a statement. “BlackBerry has 30 million social media fans, and we’re looking forward to continuing to encourage them and all NFL football fans to see the power of BlackBerry 10 for themselves.”
