Problem with Boeing Lithium Ion Batteries

The company that Boeing outsourced the battery to in Japan outsourced the design to another company in Japan. This company never designed a battery that had the requirements that an aircraft like the 787 needed. They designed a Lithium Ion battery that used large cells. Bad decision! They found out that large cells generate too much heat which causes thermal breakdown and fire. Elon Musk of Tesla Motors called Boeing and told them they had the same problem when they designed their first batteries using the same technology for their cars. Elon told them that they solved the problem by building batteries with thousands of micro cells that do not create the heat that the large cells do. Boeing is working their new battery design using this information.
