my research at Macys and Lord Taylor

went into both stores in Manhattan today, I went up to Coach counter in each store and told salesperson I wanted to buy a bag for my girlfriend for Valentines... and I asked for the hottest selling bags women want..... and the sales person walked me over to the Michael Kors counter...I was surprised she didn't even show me a Coach bag.... she went on to say the Michael Kors bags are lighter and more fashionable and hats what women want ,,, For the record I am long COH because I liked the dividend and earnings... still I was surprised today and maybe now I think COH could be the dreaded value trap

    Sentiment: Buy

    • 'they' say you should never extrapolate your personal experiences into a broader trend or investment. It is more mis-leading than helpful.

    • Which bag did you buy? Your research sucks because you didn't buy a coach or kors bag

    • That is what I had noticed for the past year; younger women want kors bags and the older ones want to feel younger so they buy kors too. It is the fashion business and you cannot reduce prices enough to make it a must have.
The other thing Coach did was to cheapen the brand by opening so many factory outlets and selling low end stuff. I was surprised that they did not miss by more than they did last quarter. I guess the legacy launch helped but won't be there this year.
The gross margins are the higher than its competitors and that another reason the valuation reasoning could still make it a sell.

I was short into last earnings but feel that it has to go back down to 40 or so at least... while KORS keeps going higher; kors is building a more sustainable luxury brand with an ever increasing offering of accessories.

      Sentiment: Strong Sell

    • Great scuttlebut(Fisher term for doing hands on research not an insult ;)

It is why despitethe GENEROUS dividend at this price level, I still don't fee comfortable pulling the trigger as even with a 13 P/E, the stock is not being properly priced for its "eh" growth and growing competition.

The thing is KORS isn't an investment at its valution either. Both of these guys should be stayed away from. Give me COH with a 8-9B valuation and I am all over it but not here. Good feedback.
