They're focusing on free to play which is the new norm. PopCap doesn't have any free2play games(except some online demos to showcase their games) and that's why they recalibrating. It's great move if you ask me.
It's not about mobile. Free2play is the new norm on all platforms these days.
You mean free to play like Bejeweled, Zuma Blitz and Solitaire Blitz? They are all on Facebook but they all suck now that ERTS took over. They're "free" except now you have to PAY to get coins/bonus items. This crap is for kids. I'll buy a game if I like it, but I'm not continually paying for "coins" to buy some #$%$ token. The latest crap they pulled with Zuma Blitz has be boycotting ALL ERTS products.
Sentiment: Strong Sell
Yah! I'm with you man! All these companies spending millions to give a product, it totally should be free. I'm going to boycott ALL the companies that don't give me their stuff for free! BTW, will you come to my funeral in a couple weeks when I am dead from starvation?
I don't really agree with you that it is the new norm, but the general point I am making is that, whatever they are focusing on, firing employees just because they "change focus" is a sign of inept management. These employees aren't robots -- they can do a wide range of things.
EA, of all companies, should be managing its costs. Until EA gets to consistent profitability, it should periodically review its costs.
There is tremendous turnover in the game-making business and employees know this. It's not a shock.
It is obviously a move designed to ensure the man at the top keeps his job, pathetic but goes on in the corporate #$%$ environment all the time across a variety of professions. This is one of the reasons I love small indie developers. However, they might be looking for people with more mobile coding and designing experience. The people they laid off can usually pick up new jobs very quickly.
Whenever a company acquires another, there is job duplication. Just because they have let some people go doesn't in any means that it was their talent. EA can do POPCAP's accounting, marketing, distribution, support, etc. it doesn't mean they let go one creative talent.
Sentiment: Strong Buy
