good news from across the pond

    (from MMWIRE)

    CHART TRACK'S TOP-SELLING PC
TITLES IN THE UK, JULY 1998
    (RANKED BY UNITS
    SOLD)

X-Files, which had the top spot in August, fell
to No. 3, but we are thoroughly confused. The
success of X-Files as a PC game hinges on the strength of
the TV-popularized brand and then on positive word of
mouth. The game could draw praises from reviewers and
initial buyers so positive word of mouth begins to
snowball and drive subsequent sales. It's the first step
that's puzzling, however. Seriously, we never knew Brits
received enough TV programming to get "The X-Files,"making
it a popular brand. Things must have changed since
we last visited. - Eidos [EIDSY] may have a serious
hit on its hands with Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines.
As we said before, the game wasn't exactly the
most-hyped SKU in the history of this biz. Some publishers
are born great and some have greatness developed
under their noses. - Mike Sabine
