SYDNEY - Australia has begun preliminary talks with China to explore the possibility of exporting uranium to fuel the Asian giants fast-developing power industry, officials said Tuesday.
The talks follow a request by Australian mining group WMC Resources Ltd. to the government to pursue the possibility of a deal potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year in new exports to China.
It comes as Australia and China prepare to begin formal talks early next year on a free trade agreement, which would further boost already booming trade between the two countries.
It would also be one of the more sensitive export agreements, which would mean China committing to Australian requirements that the uranium could not be used for military purposes, re-exported to a third country or reprocessed without prior consent.
