I already hit the thumbs up, but I have 3 tickets to see it tonight (Thursday) at 8:00 PM. My 12 year old daughter has been counting down the days and she already plans on making her grandparents go and see it in Imax in the next couple of weeks.
Out for two weekends, “Ender's Game” has made about $53 million domestically, according to the website Box Office Mojo. For some perspective, M. Night Shyamalan's forgettable “The Last Airbender” had made about $55 million after two weekends in 2010. With an estimated production cost of $110 million, “Ender's Game” has some work cut out for it if it wants Lions Gate Entertainment to make a sequel.
The first “Hunger Games” movie made $150 million — in its first weekend. It went on to gross more than $400 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo. Some Hollywood observers think the second in the series, “Catching Fire,” could make $200 million on its opening weekend, wiping all competitors out. This baby is getting two more sequels and probably a note from Lions Gate to novelist Suzanne Collins to please, please, please write more “Hunger Games” books.
Let's face it, kids games in our dystopian future don't look like a lot of fun. For Ender, it involves violently fending off bullies, being manipulated by a totalitarian government, putting up with deceitful adults and the occasional genocidal attack against an alien planet. Of course, anyone who's played endless games of Candy Land with their 4 year old knows that kids games today are no picnic, so really, pick your poison.
In this dystopian future, the game involves homicidal children out to kill each other in the hopes of getting food for their starving families and neighbors. (I'm still not sure Candy Land isn't more painful, though.) In this universe, Katniss must use her wits and bow to fend off opponents from other districts, save the hapless Peeta over and over again, be manipulated by a totalitarian government and put up with deceitful adults.
Ender Wiggin is a boy genius who leads from the front and uses his resources ruthlessly, sacrificing the lives of others in order to achieve victory.
Katniss leads by example, using empathy, sharp wits and her deadly bow and arrow for her victories. In the end, she would rather sacrifice herself than let those she loves suffer.
My daughter is attending Saturday with her entire 8th grade class. They are reading the series and the Divergent books as part of their curriculum. The teachers are also attending. Had to pre-buy for the matinee online. Domestic box office is going to be HUGE!!
