Analysts say they view Bank of America Corp.’s acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. as a good long-term fit but say the deal raises short-term questions.

The acquisition gives BofA the premier retail brokerage platform and a more geographically diverse investment-banking business, Jeff Harte, an analyst with Sandler O’Neill & Partners, wrote in a research note Monday. But he notes the deal was brought together very quickly, and BofA could be stretched thin on capital and management resources as it integrates both Countrywide Financial Corp. and Merrill.

BofA Chief Executive Kenneth Lewis said Monday he is confident the bank will be able to handle both integrations “professionally.” And in a call with analysts, he said a reexamination of BofA’s common stock dividend is an option as the company looks to build its capital base."
