The first half of the "GAME" is over, leaving a lot of the longs holding a "bag" of stocks we paid a much higher price for. Now the second half of the "GAME" is being played out. The Hedge fund must cover all those shares without driving the price of the stock back up to be successful. The retail shorts is what they need now. The hedge fund will cover as the retail shorts buy their short positions. The hedge fund has a bigger position than all the retail shorts, so the price of the stock will most likely go up as they are covering, and longs are adding. The results of that will be the retail shorts will be holding their "BAG" at a loss to them. Bag holders on each end (longs and shorts) are sitting on "DEAD MONEY" until all the money the hedge fund took out comes back into the stock.
