Chicago 4th Most Miserable City In USA...

Factors used to determine the list include violent crime, commute times, weather, unemployment, taxes, home prices and foreclosure rates among the 200 largest metro areas in the U.S.

High unemployment at over 11%, plus high property taxes, put Rockford in the number three spot on the list, behind only Detroit and Flint, Michigan.

Chicago made the number four spot because of long commutes, tough winter weather and a tanking residential real estate market.

Chicago suburb Lake County also made the list at number nine. Forbes says Lake County is one of the richest counties in the country but home prices are down nearly 30% in the past five years.

The top spot on the list goes to Detroit which has the highest crime rate in the U.S. according to the FBI.

Flint and Warren, Michigan are on the list. Three cities in California made the top ten, as did New York City.

Cities on Forbes ‘Most Miserable Cities’ list:

#1: Detroit – highest crime rate in the country per the FBI

#2: Flint, Michigan – residents migrating out as jobs evaporate and high violent crime rate

#3: Rockford, Illinois – high unemployment at 11.2%, plus high property tax rates

#4: Chicago, Illinois – long commutes, brutal winters and a tanking residential real estate market

#5: Modesto, California – third highest foreclosure rate in the U.S. at 3.8%, and unemployment recently reported at 15%

#6: Vallejo, California – city just emerged from bankruptcy plus they still have high foreclosure and unemployment rates

#8: Stockton, California – high foreclosure, unemployment and crime rates plus last year the city became the largest in the U.S. to file for bankruptcy.

#9: Lake County, Illinois – It’s one of the richest counties in the U.S. but home prices are down nearly 30% in the past five years.
