CNBC fast money opinion on coal

Do not buy coal. No one is switching back to coal from nat gas.

    • The analyst was Francisco Blanch, coal analyst for B Of A; so it wasn't a CNBC panelist. What he said was that with a global oversupply of coal and China's economy softening that there likely would be no rebound for coal prices.
This probably is for the most part pretty accurate, unfortunately.
On an optimistic note there are some possibilities that could help, at least here in the US. Anyone who has seen 'Fracking Hell' a documentary on nat gas drilling can judge for himself but there are major impediments that could derail some of the momentum in drilling: Huge amounts of water are required to produce NG; leaks at the drilling sites as well as along the pipeline are creating problems with flammable gas escaping from water sources as well as the poisoning of water supplies; exports of nat gas over the next few years could diminish the supplies of nat gas; vehicular use of nat gas could also diminish the supply; and last, the leaps into clean coal technology (Coal Direct Carbon Looping) could return coal to favor with the public and the president.
