Cost of electrical power by source.

First off, I have been a shareholder of SO for 10+ years and I am not pumping any stock. I am trying to share some of my due diligence, it's the teacher in me.

Here is a Wikipedia article on comparative costs.

Check the graph near the bottom of the study.

Here is where I see some problems with these figures.
The nuclear power is coming from OLDER plants. Depending how the depreciation is figured they show be approaching full depreciation and will need to be:
    a) replaced
    b) rebuilt to new safety standards.
New plants are going to be far more expensive than the old plants and the bureaucracy is only going to be worse.

One of the principle problems is baseline power costs. Residential areas do not demand much power between midnight and 7 AM. With coal, gas, hydroelectric as your base source, it is easy to shut down your excess generators. But with nuclear it takes quite a bit of time and effort; this means that nuclear will become the newer, higher baseline cost.
Solar and wind power are unreliable (because the sun is not always up?), so it will still require the equivalent coal, etc. in power plants construction. Also, remember that the average 1000 MegaWatt power plant is equivalent to 500 windmills.

Cheap hydroelectric power will really draw industry to the area. At Niagara Falls, you see a beautiful falls during the day but it creates a tremendous amount of cheap electric power at night for a large chemical industry at night. The St. Lawrence river did have several large aluminum plants along the shores - they may still be there.

    • The government/obama is not going to let us build NE. They are talking out of both sides of their mouth as the talk about clean energy and then do everything in the courts and by way of the EPA to stop it. Did you know that the Epa closed the largest coal company in the US a few weeks ago claiming people live within 60 miles of it. Obama continues to spot drilling, coal and NE. Those are the simple fact!!!!!!!
