    Cadence hobbling Virtuoso

How screwed up is that ?

Just got the following message in Virtuoso 6.1.3

“WARNING* (DB-220704): The usage of non-SKILL Pcells in Virtuoso
is not a supported feature.” (You are stupidly going where Cadence management does not want you to go - interoperability)

Looks like they are shutting down all the open features that go with OpenAccess. Every other self-respecting OpenAccess based custom or analog design tool knows how to use a pycell, but apparently not Virtuoso. Oh wait, that's just a sham warning to keep people away from using open languages with Virtuoso. What does that say about Cadence management and their intentions..

    • Yes, we ran into the same issue. I agree, this is a silly limitation, especially considering that Cadence engineering is the main owner of OpenAccess code creation and maintenance

Just as an FYI, There are products that allow you to use SKILL Pcells outside of Cadence, which means that you can switch away from Virtuoso without having to change your legacy SKILL Pcells. This might be the way to go.

Personally speaking I think Cadence is fighting a losing battle. SKILL Pcells are no longer a barrier from moving away from Virtuoso. When Virtuoso customers start bailing out , nobody should be surprised :)
