    Inmate killed in public prison in CA

    Police suspect cellmate in Wasco prison

    A 29-year-old inmate in the
    reception center at Wasco State Prison was beaten to death
    Wednesday night, and his cellmate is in protective custody
    as the only suspect in the killing, officials
    reported Thursday.
    The victim, Tomas Tanishita, who
    was in custody for a parole violation in San
    Bernardino County, was found at 7:55 p.m. as inmates were
    being let out of their cells for a meal, prison
    spokesman Lt. John Katavich said.
    Correctional officers
    saw James Oh, 31, leave the cell, but they didn't see
    the victim leave, Katavich said.
    They found
    Tanishita on the floor bleeding and unresponsive, Katavich
    Attempts were made to revive him, but he was pronounced
    dead on arrival at San Joaquin Hospital, the
    lieutenant said. Tanishita arrived at Wasco on Monday, he
    Oh had blood on his clothes but he declined to give
    a statement to investigators, Katavich said.
