Because "inflation" is measured by core inflation which excludes food and engery. Normally food and energy prices are volatile so economists don't want to include them. However, recently the food and engery prices spiked up and didn't come down, so some economists are saying they should be included in the measurement of inflation. We might have a change in the near future. But meanwhile the government data show no inflation at all as TV, computer, iPod and even housing price kept going down to offset some other items' price increase.
Government "inflation" numbers EXCLUDE food, energy, housing, rent, healthcare, and anything else you REQUIRE to survive. So long as the cost of plasma TVs and IPODs is dropping, you should kiss the ground your exalted gibbon leaders tread upon.
