NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Despite upbeat commentary from computer component suppliers in recent days, Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - News) has yet to see an uptick in demand, said Kevin Rollins, president and chief operating officer.
There's has been change in attitude in the marketplace with people feeling better about the industry, but that hasn't translated into hard data to support an improvement in demand, Rollins said Wednesday at the Bears Stearns 14th Annual Technology Conference in New York.
According to Rollins, Dell is hopeful that demand will improve over the course of the year.
While the executive said the impact of SARS has been factored into the company's financial targets, he said it hasn't hurt Dell sales, even in China.
Concern over SARS' impact on demand is a "little overblown," said Rollins, noting that the company's business in Asia continues to "grow well."
In Europe, Rollins said business remains stable. Dell doesn't expect a major uptick in Europe mainly because business did not drop off as much as in the U.S.
Rollins made the remarks during a keynote address before he spoke to investors in a meeting that was closed to the press.
Shares of Dell were recently trading at $31.15, down 74 cents, or 2.3%.
