Ok, so I have too much time on my hands...
I went to the regional enclosed mall today to see how Skullcandy is doing in that retail arena.
Area population is 130,000 only large enclosed Mall in the area. Anchor stores are Macy's and JC Penny's, there is the usual Barns and Nobels etc. typical medium sized enclosed Mall.
Zumiez - Only headphones sold there are Skullcandy. Nice center island display.
Journey's (another active teen clothing store) - Again only Skullcandy sold there
Radio Shack - Kinda pleasantly surprised as Skullcandy had about 1/4 of the total PEG space there.
Game Stop - VERY limited gaming headsets to choose from. They had a few Astro's up behind the counter (i.e. Skullcandy is distributing to them now).
Best Buy Mobile - Again had about 1/4 of the total PEG space. The salesman stated they sell very well. Best headsets for the dollar. He said they do sell the Beats, Sony etc. but so many of these high end products out there, that range is getting choked. "who can afford these 250-350" dollar headsets over and over he said.
All in all a nice stroll to the mall this morning...
I tried to be unbiased. I am scared to #$%$ with all the Analysts are saying, just needed to see for my self (outside the Target (which I know they do well) and BestBuy big box (not so well there in my opinion, but again the salespeople keep saying they are the best for the buck and sell well)
I can also say the 2XL dominates Walgreens locally.
I also have asked everyone I know or run into about Skullcandy and the results are the same. Big time brand recognition, no complaints about quality (quality / price an issue for Beats).
Over and Out...
Sentiment: Strong Buy
I'm still waiting for the gaming sets to hit bigger. I've seen Astro's here and there, but only a couple of SLYR corded models at target so far... hmmmm They are trying to hook up with video game designers/distributors (Kate Uptons "Army of Two" video)... I can see that as an instand 50-100 sales boost no problem if they get distribution out. Gamers know Skullcandy and come on, some guy playing combat and sports video games - wearing sets representing a green "Turtle and a Beach"? Talk about having your (you know what) cut off... :)
I did not do as many checks as you, but did some.
I found the same as you at Zumiez.
Apple store had tons of Skullcandy earbuds and 5 boxes of Aviators. The Aviators were up high out of many peoples' reach, so not displayed well versus the dozens of Beats boxes. In the trial area of the Apple store there were no Aviators, but there was a pair of Navigators versus about a dozen other options. There were no boxes for the Navigators on the display, so did they sell out? I should have asked.
Target had lots of Skullcandy. They were the dominant earbuds and fairly well represented for the larger styles.
Game Stop was mostly Turtle Beach. There was one box for SLYR that was marked "For Display Only". I did not look behind the counter for Astros.
When I get around to it there are many other stores I can check in the area.
Sentiment: Strong Buy
I visited Radio Shack and GameStop.
Radio Shack has about 1/3 of its headphone/earphone space devoted to Skullcandy. Beats was out in force but about 1/2 the space of Skullcandy. After buying some Skullcandy headphones I asked cashier's input. He said they're good sound for the price, but you can get better sound by spending more. I asked about quality and he said they haven't had problems. I asked about "other brands," and cashier volunteered that some customers have returned Beats due to quality problems.
GameStop was dominated by Turtle Beach, with Triton, Beats and Afterglow represented as well.
Pretty wide selection of headsets/headphones. I saw no AG / Skullcandy products at GameStop at all.
Thanks for the channel check. Good to know. Defiantly have their work cut out for them at Game Stop. Although some question GS survival long term. Sales guys are always trying to upsell to more premium sets, but IMO there is a big jump from 50-99 to these 250+ sets. Beats quality will bring them down long term, Skullcandy went through that phase and have emerged with a better quality product.
Just my opinion....
Went to another mall. All was good. Radio Shack & Best Buy Mobile had the highest percentage of Skullcandy products (40%?) other than Zumiez which was 100% Skullcandy. Game Stop had SLYR and the Astro A40 & A50 for sale. The A50 was on top of the A40 so you couldn't see that there were two kinds. I separated them and put the A50 on top of a Beats box.
