Would it actually be that bad. Another way to look at it would to consider that the Russians really did not like the idea of another potash mine, however, they knew that they could not sway BHP, as the company had researched it for years and had a long term view. Clearly it would be much easier to sway the shareholders, by attacking the the basic views and creating anxiety about the outlook. They carried out their plan and it worked fantastic, it put the shareholders against the project probably more effectively than they hoped it could. Why else would the owner of a business announce that they expect to drive down the price of their product by 25%. I don't know if that is 80% of their reasoning or 40%, but I think this is at least a component of what happened behind the scenes.
